Little effort was made to train squadronsas a whole individual ship training being considered adequate. Abroad, the missionsin peacetimes were primarily flag-showing for the protection of Americancitizens, property, and commerce. 1Due to thevery slow communications of that day, Squadron Commodores were givenonly broad directives for carrying out their missions. Thesenior officer went under the courtesy title of Commodore.
